I had the same problem after I POR-15'd my tank. Picked up a tap at Ace
hardware. A cheap steel tap, but the correct size.

Hi Joe,
When I put the POR-15 in my tank to seal it, I let the excess run out
the petcock holes. Needless to say, all of my threads were clogged. I
thought about trying to get ahold of the right sized tap, but they are
hard to find. Instead, I used a 6mm x 1mm tap and just turned it around
the circumfrance of the hole until the threads were cleaned out. Took a
bit of time, but I didn't have to wait a week for an expensive tap to
arrive. I grabbed ahold of the tap with the vice grip to give me
something to hold onto.
As for the size, they are 12mm x 1mm.
I do have a couple of hard to find taps that I would be willing to lend
to anyone in need (just remember to send them back!):
1. swing arm thread tap...for the theads in the frame.
2. exhaust thread chaser...for the the threads in the exhaust port of
the head. This one will clean up the threads, but is not intended for
cutting new ones.
If you need something, just let me know.

Would anyone know what the thread diameter & pitch is for the spigot that the petcock threads into? I think I read here a while back that it is 10mm x 1mm - sound right? I have to do a repair to the paint on my tank - it bubbled up around ther filler neck. While I was at it, I wanted to purchase a tap & chase out the threads in my tank - one side was buggered up & damaged a petcock, and dollars to a donut, it's going to bite me in the ass when I start to mess with it. Any help appreciated! Joe in St Louis 850T Powered Ambo "Junkyard" Bruce Giller wrote:
