Karl makes a good point. I once went out to start my perfectly running Ambo
not an hour after running the old girl and she was dead. Turned out to be a
bad battery ground. ALWAYS make sure the grounds are good before disassembly

Sounds like battery/regulator/starting circuit. If the engine were to turn
over freely but no spark then I would have said coil.
As I have said before...apply common sense to these bikes and use proper
diagostic techniques (in other words go from the simplist to most
complicated idea) and you can't fail. Also...insert a couple of beers while
you are doing this....it helps.
If all else fails and you want to go to a high tech bike that you need to
take to a shop to have worked on send me the bike and your title. I'll give
you $500 for that old piece of crap :-)
For what it is worth...these bikes are like any machinery...prone to
failure. However once you get them "dialed in right" they will run...and
run...and run trouble free.

One more thing you might try is swapping out the battery cables to a larger gauge and make sure the ground to the battery tray is clean. It you still have the stock cables they are probably shot from age. good luck |
Hi, all. I'm a new loop owner and new to this list. Picked up this '73 eldo in Oct, it had sat for a number of years but was in good physical shape, no corrosion. Had to do some rewiring, replacement of rubber parts (fuel lines, airfilter boot, etc), cleaned carbs & tank. Finally got the engine started with the right plugs (NGK BP07ES's won't cut it despite advice to the contrary). Problem is, after running for a bit, enough to get hot, if I kill it or it stalls it won't turn over until it cools down a bit. Hitting the starter just gets a "click" at the regulator. After waiting 5-10 minutes it will turn over & start again. Could this be a problem with the solenoid? I'm thinking that something is getting stuck open when it gets hot, and electrically the only thing that should be getting hot is that solenoid because its the only part in the electric path that's mounted to the engine and would get hot when running. Anyone have any ideas, set me straight before I take a wrench to that thing and start disassembling things and losing screws. motoroberto '73 eldorado |
