First, timing may be too far advanced. It is trying to fire while the
piston is still rising in the cylinder. More of a problem with a hot
engine than with cold.
Second, if it only goes "click" and doesn't crank at all, then it is
eithe dirty inside the starter and solenoid, or it is a weak contact
within the starter relay. All of these parts can be disassembled,
thoroughly cleaned, and re-assembled.
You may wish to review a re-wiring of the circuit for the starter relay
as discussed in Guzziology.
