I don't think this is it because it ran fine for a while (about 20 miles)
then it began to run sluggish and one cylinder quit and I let off the gas
and it died and it hasn't started since. But it sure sounds like a timing
issue. Is there something inside the distributor that could have come loose
to cause a problem like this?

You could have your distributor 180 degrees out. Been there done that! It
will crank and will almost fire, but will get sluggish when you try use the
throttle.

I have a question about my eldo. When I hit the starter, it cranks really
easily but if I pull the choke lever or twist the throttle while cranking
it's like I just tripled the stress on the starter, the starter will bog
down and almost stop cranking. Is this normal?
