Ted,
You could have your distributor 180 degrees out. Been there done that! It
will crank and will almost fire, but will get sluggish when you try use the
throttle.

I have a question about my eldo. When I hit the starter, it cranks really
easily but if I pull the choke lever or twist the throttle while cranking
it's like I just tripled the stress on the starter, the starter will bog
down and almost stop cranking. Is this normal?
