Hey, if you think my Ambo looks good, you ought to check out John
Ulrich's...I won't even park mine next to his (makes mine look too
ratty)!
As for the pea shooter mufflers, I can't really say whether or not
they've hurt my performance. The only other Ambo I've ever ridden is
John Ulrich's, and he has the same mufflers as mine.
I know that the cigar shaped mufflers (like John's and mine) came with
several outlet sizes. The smallest and largest sized are no longer
available new (to the best of my knowledge). I think what John and I
have is something of a compromise.
If memory serves, Guzzi originally came out with the smaller sized holes
because they created more torque (or so Guzzi says). Latter they
enlarged the holes due to the US demand. From a seat-of-the-pants
pespective, the larger holes are louder, and would think they would
offer slightly greater power (less back pressure). I think Greg Field
may have addressed this issue in his book.
Personally, I like the look of them, so I chose them over the slash back
Lafranconi's. If I ever do an Eldo restoration, I think I would lean
heavily toward the Lafranconi's.
You can see both styles of mufflers here:

Hi Bob, OK, there's a mix-up going on here! :-) The Ambo for which I sent you the link belongs to Greg Bender (also on the List); mine doesn't look anywhere near so good (yet!). So Greg, you've got to take over from here! ;-) Les
