Hi Matt and Rob,
Thanks for the replies. Rob, I'm sure I put the springs in correctly
when I replaced them...but I couldn't tell you off the top of my head
which way they go. Matt, it's good to hear that the free play is normal.
As for the time to return to idle, I'm chaulking this up to differences
between my Ambassador and my Quota. After putting 500 miles on the
Ambassador this weekend, I'm convinced nothing is wrong...except I can't
get this stupid smile off my face :>
Thanks for the input.

Greg, There is supposed to be a some looseness in the advance springs to provide the initial advance after starting. The weights move out slightly and provide that initial advance. Then the springs counter the centrifugal force of the weights to provide the hopefully proper advance as engine speed increases. Bob, I have also heard the same about putting the springs on the wrong sides, but it should not really matter if they are backward. I think each weight is slightly different and therefore require different spring strength to provide the necessary spark advance curve. But then again, what do I know Matt in MI |
