Sounds like the way to go. I have been thinking about simplifying the
petcock affair by installing a banjo at the tank and then running an
aftermarket shut off along the line. Briggs and Stratton make a really nice
shut off that sells for about $5. Not pretty...not original but does the
job.
By the way...what does N.T.P. stand for?

In any case, I found some petcocks sold by Storz Performance, Inc that fit 1/4 N.P.T. threads. I tapped the bosses (?) on the tank to fit, put some sealant on, screwed the taps in, and we were good to go. They're pretty cheap, too, about $15 ea, but no reserve.
