Harry:
I understand all that.
Both Eldos on which I currently have broken bolts had all the updates,
including bedding both the bracket and generator pin in
metal-impregnated epoxy. It's those 700-plus-mile days that really
stress them, apparently, since that's when bolts broke on both.
The real problem is that both mounting bolts are on centerline, in the
middle of the V of an engine with a large rocking couple, and hold on a
very heavy generator. If the bolts were to the side of centerline or
staggered, there'd be no problem.

Greg & Loopers: There are articles in MGNOC Tips Vol.1 on both installing an alternator and on bracing up the generator mount with straps to the u-channel of the frame above the generator. If you don't have the books, I'll be happy to scan and send you the articles. Let me know. The generator bracket breakage, etc. is mostly due to vibration "working" the front of the generator resulting in the aluminum aound the locating pin getting worn, resulting in the generator bouncing around on the bracket. A sheet steel "shim" under the front of the generator will help this considerably, but checking the bolts on a regular basis (like every time you change the oil) will also alleviate this problem. Our family Eldo has over 170,000 miles on it, and it didn't start breaking the bolts and stuff until I started neglecting it about 20,000 miles ago. What we really need here is a way to positively lock down the front of the generator, hmmmm? HarryBinNC ------------------------------- Greg Field wrote:
