You can do it whilst the dist is still in the bike carefully of course .
A hooked scriber type tool is handy. The "trick" is not to overstretch
the spring as it quickly loses it's calibration if over stretched . It
may be best to take the distributor out and check the shaft and bushings
etc. Much of the timing vagueries oft blamed on points are in fact wear
in other places.
There are still many shops across the country that specialize in
distributor rebuilding . The Guzzi unit is any easy task for a good
shop. If you have trouble email me . I will either find a shop for you
,or rebuild it here for you.

With a recent mention of distributor springs, I'm reminded that I have a set sitting on the shelf for about a year now that I've never put in.. I recently put on a new chain and tensioner (valtek). I've still got sort of 'wobble' in the timing mark when I put a light on it and throttle up.. so I was thinking I might get on with putting the springs in.. if that has anything to do with it? I assume the ones in there are pretty ancient. Long story short.. it looks like a bit of a challenge.. does one typically remove the distributor to ease getting at those things.. or do it in place.. are there any tricks.. it's a tiny spring(s) and I can see them flying already... thanks in advance...
