Hi Ron,
There's two Ambo motors apart on my bench at present - both have the oil jet holes. The '74 Eldo rods I sold Ian Adkins didn't, so as far as I can tell Ambos (and V700s?) had them and all but the earliest Eldos didn't. The later (no oil jet hole) rod is likely stronger even though it is cruder in appearance. The early ones use a different rod bolt and although I haven't heard of any failure related to this, there must have been a reason Guzzi changed so critical of a component (other than to save a few lira).
Personally, I'd use the rods that came in the motor originally unless they are defective. I don't know how much balancing Guzzi did with Eldo motors, but replacing them with others could upset that. Cheers,
Charlie.

Guzziesti, I'm building an Eldo motor, ready to install rods, check for the cylinder wall lubrication ports, & find none! There are small half moon shaped cutouts in the big end next to the rod bearings that I don't see on any of the rods w/the ports I have. The rod part number from Eldo parts book has an update, (14061501-use14061506) is the new number the rod w/the port? The non-ported rods that came out of the motor look crude & don't have "moto guzzi" cast in the sides. I have a set (unsure what they came from) w/ the ports & the "moto guzzi" in the sides, by everything I can measure they are identical, any reason why I shouldn't use them? I also have a set that I know are from an SP1000, once again, all the measurements are the same, but they carry a different part number (14061550). Is there a difference in weight for the 1000 motor? I don't have a precision balance. What rods should I use for maximum longevity of this motor? |
