Charles,
Confused, because what happened first...did the layshaft seal leak, letting oil onto the UJ and "washing the grease out of the joints"...OR did the UJ die of old age and the vibration of that perhaps let oil past the forward seal... |
I would think the latter. Even if the oil was "washing out" the grease you
are still getting lubrication and I think the joint would still hold.
when I slide in that very precious new Convert UJ/shaft drive...should I preceed it with a new layshaft seal...and now I wonder if I should add that gear oil to the boot area or not... |
In thinking about all this....I wouldn't bother adding oil to the boot. You
could take some grease and smear a thin layer on the outside just to prevent
rust but really I don't think anything more is needed.
all in all can't complain about a UJ that had gone 74k...friend down the street just finished two sprockets and chain he has to do every 12-15k for $600 on his newer Triumph... |
I have heard that the Ujoints can last between 30k miles and 100k
miles....it all depends on the one you get and the various factors that
cause it to wear out. Better to have a grease nipple so you can squeeze new
grease in every 5k miles. I wonder if the new ones can be retrofitted to fit
in the older bikes?
Interesting discussion for sure....Regards...Ian
