Hi Dave,
With minimal outlay of cash you can do it yourself. You can get a small bench grinder and swap buffing wheels for the grinding ones or just use an old electric motor.

Eastwood (www.eastwoodcompany.com) sells an adapter that goes on the shaft of the motor to mount buffing wheels and buffing kits that will have all of the supplies you'll need for most jobs. I have their "The Art of Buffing" video and will loan it to any Looper that would like to view it.

Caswell Plating (www.caswellplating.com) also has supplies and "The Complete Buffing and Polishing Booklet" that you can view and print with Acrobat reader. The booklet is very helpful in choosing what you need and once you're set up, how to do it.

What I use personally is an old 1/2 hp electric motor bought at a yard sale with the Eastwood adapter and an 8" bench grinder from Northern Tool (www.northerntool.com). I also have a flex shaft which threads onto the Eastwood adapter for use with felt buffing bobs to get into tight spots.

I would not recommend the buffing motors from Harbor Freight Tools - the three I tried from them all had sub-par performance. None of them had enough power to do the job effectively.

Buff safely if you do it yourself. Wear a dust mask for sure or you'll do a good imitation of an old coal miner when you blow your nose. Eww! I wear a full face shield rather than safety glasses (they fog up) and gloves (sometimes just nitrile ones and sometimes cotton) to protect from the compound schmegma and cuts. Let it shine, have fun! Cheers,

Charlie

OK, black parts are at Powder Coaters, engine is going together, paint
has been decided on and arranged. Now for the polishing question. Valve
covers, belt cover, wheels, etc. Has anyone paid for polishing? What's
the price range? Have you done this yourself? Do I need a polishing
wheel? What's the process, etc.?
