In my particular case there were small gouges on the sealing surface, probably from the PO scraping off the gasket none too carefully at some point. I suggested a sealer in this area for just that reason - several of the engine cases and pans I've seen have nicks or gouges large enough to cause a small leak. The pan doesn't need to come off all that often (on a non-oil filter equipped Loop), so a little extra clean-up time is of little concern for me. If I just didn't have to lay on my back to do it! :-) Just my experience, YMMV. Cheers,
