Grease the gasket. The crumbly stuff could be oil sludge or particles
of the rubber timing chain tensioner (if yours has a chain).

The last person definitely did. Also, had some interesting little specs of gravely stuff in the bottom of the pan that you could crumble with your thumb nail... what is it?
