When you say it jumps around, is it like a short sharp wiggle, say from 2 -
2 1/2 back to 2 or a long drawn out jump, say from 2 to 3 1/2 back to around
2 again. And does it correspond with engine speed or just do it's own thing?
Never noticed the tach issue before your misfire problem?
SMALL chance it might be on the blink at the same time as whatever is
causing your misfire. Maybe just coincidental.
Cookie's right. doesn't take much for those things to be all across the
board.

P.s. You can usually hear an exhaust leak also, a short, sharp popping,
usually of a higher note, when engine is running "normal". Any noises like
that or any other out of the ordinary besides the backfire?

Checked the exhaust nut--couldn't turn it.
Will check the valves, too. But why would that make the tach jump
around? (also might eliminate carb issue, wouldn't it?)
