Subject: Hot misfire
Loopsters: My Eldo periodically has a hot misfire problem on the left cylinder only. The bike starts immediately after turning the key. Runs fine during warm up. The problem arises after 15 or so minutes of running on the highway, then getting into stop/go traffic. This does not happen all the time. The problem is most likely to occur if I stop the bike for a few minutes then restart it. There's a miss, the tach swings kind of wildly and I get an occasional backfire. It seems to get better if I get back on the highway and run it a bit. I checked the plugs--they are nice and coffee colored, no heavy soot or oil fouling. The plug wires look pretty new (I just got the bike this spring) and seem to have a reasonable resistance (about 5K ohms). I'll check the points gap and timing this weekend, but I set them not long ago (the idle mixtures were set and the carbs balanced then, too). Any suggestions for other things to check? I'm thinking a new coil might be in order, but I don't see why that would only affect one cylinder. Rich A |
