David, That is a very helpful site but it does not say anything about the new tensioner. |
If you are keeping the chain you need the springloaded tensioner. The
original one required removal of the timing case cover to adjust. I
think that was the same engineer who decided we would have to remove the
pan to change the oil filter.
I am running the Agostini timing gears in a '77 SP motor. They sound
like a helicopter taking off but make for very accurate ignition timing.
Aluminum timing gears are not recommended for bikes without oil
filters.
My '73 Eldo suffered a cam gear explosion. The cam gear drive in the
older bikes looks robust but there has been a history of failure. The
chain drive with the updated tensioner should give you years of carefree
motoring.
I have a spare engine that has gears and that is my next major project. A full rebuild with bigger cylinders, a late model pan with filter and various other modifications. |
I considered doing all that and grabbed a low milage SP motor that had
all the mods I wanted as part of the original design. In all my bike
has parts from three different bikes. Two Eldos and an SP.
Its suspect parentage led to the name "Love Child".
