Hi Alan,
When removing the stock tensioner, it's not necessary to plug the two threaded holes. I replaced both the chain and the tensioner at the same time so don't remember if you can remove the old tensioner without first removing the chain. When installing the Valtek tensioner, I found it easiest to remove the rubbing shoe from the pivot bracket, install the bracket, install the chain and then reinstall the shoe to the bracket. I bought my Valtek tensioner and master-link-equipped timing chain from Moto International and they sent a great "help sheet" along with it. Hope this helps!
