Mark:

My '71 Ambo (frame date Oct. '70) had the speedo only instrument panel, but
the heel-toe shifter.
From everything I have read and heard, Moto Guzzi was, until pretty
recently, into "running" changes that tended to correspond very loosely, if
at all, with official model year designations.

Cool bike, by the way.

Two suggestions:
#1, join the Moto Guzzi National Owners Club. GREAT newsletter, helpful,
friendly folks and well worth the money.

#2, resist the temptation to put a battery in it, squirt some gas in the
carbs, and see if it'll fire up. The plated lining on the cylinders tends to
loosen in bikes that have sat for extended periods. (Yet seems to last
forever in bikes that see regular use.) If this has happened, starting the
bike will cause the oil rings to scrape the plating from the cylinder. The
plating bits then fall into the oil pan, get sucked through the pump and
dispersed through the engine where they clog the oil passages. Complete
engine teardown and rebuild is the only recourse at that point.
Have someone knowledgable check your cylinders, and deal with any issues
they present before attempting to start it.

Thanks guys, it's good to know I got a decent deal. When I stopped to look
at the bike the guy wanted $1000 for it. I had no idea what it was worth,
and really couldn't spend more than $400 for what was really an impulse buy.
I really didn't think he'd accept less than half his asking price, but he
did.

I'm trying to determine if my bike is a '70 or a '71. It is titled as a '71
but the reference material I have found so far says a '71 should have a
speedo/tach and a heal/toe shifter. My bike has only a speedometer and does
not have a heel/toe shifter. The build date on the frame is July 1970. Is it
a '71 or actually a '70 titled as a '71?

Thanks,
Mark Wolf
