Jack,
How old are the seals in the motor? I don't know why, but in my limited
experience there is something about old seals and synthetic oils that
don't get along. Now mind you, this is mostly on rear ends and
transmissions, but having seen the front seal on my ambo I couldnt' help
but note how remarkably similar it is to the ones on the rear drive.
Realistically, if you are only running the bike 1000 miles per year you
should be changing the oil at the end of the season (or more frequently)
anyway. Since air cooled engines are notoriously harsh on motor oil you
are probably better off to change conventional dino juice more often
than to change synthetic less frequently.

Not to re-start an oil thread, but I have the Ambassador apart for a new clutch and am considering filling the sump with Mobil 1 (from WalMart) when I reassemble. This bike only gets used about 1,000 miles per year and motor is in fine condition. It has an 89 mm bore, runs strong, and uses no oil. I'd just like to reward the old girl with some extra TLC. I'm I OK to do this? |
