Ian, Yep, there isn't much inside these forks; just a big spring and a damper mechanism (really just a piston with holes in it). The fork tubes are held to the upper plate by those big fork nuts and also the triple tree clamps. I don't suspect that your tube is loose in the mounts. I'd try some heavy motor oil in your forks such as 70 or 50 wt.; pretty easy to drain and fill.

Hi Ian ..I had the same problem you speak of ,it turns out the solution was the replacement of my shock cartridges , but I have the disc brake fork which is different than the old system on the ambo.
