I had a cylinder head stud break on my 74 eldo right
under the nut. I was riding along at about 60 mph and
suddenly I heard a loud "chink" (when it hit the
inside of the valve cover at high velocity) and then
noticed a sudden decrease in power. I replaced the
stud with a new one. I found that the old stud came
out easily with PB Blaster sprayed in the threads and
vise grip pliers clamped only moderately tightly. I
remember that I couldn't get a torque wrench (to
properly torque the bolt according to specs) on the
deep inside head bolt because I didn't have the right
tool. I've since developed a cylinder base gasket
leak. Make sure you torque that pesky deep inside bolt
correctly or you'll end up like me. Mine was on the
left side.

Thanks Patrick, I've already got the broken stud replaced and the engine back together. I welded a nut on the end of the broken stud put a wrench to it and backed it right out. I feel very lucky. I stole a replacement stud from the Ambo I'm building. I'm still going to need a cylinder bolt (long one) so I can put it back into the Ambo Tim Patrick Hayes wrote:
