Keith,
The problem is likely in the shift selector mechanism. It may be that
one of two things is happening. First of all, it may be that when you
took it apart to get the spring back in you may have rotated the shift
drum pawl gear by one tooth. This is enough to make it so that the thing
won't shift above second gear. Remove the shift selector cover (making
sure the bike is in 2nd gear before you do. Look in the hole in the back
of the trans for the left-hand shift pawl. A portion of it will be
visible to the left of the gear that moves the pawls. This pawl needs to
be at the ten-o-clock position. If it is not, rotate the shift pawl gear
until the pawl IS at the ten-o-clock position.
The second problem may be that the shift return spring is not returning
to center when released. This is controlled by the eccentric shaft/pin
that has it slot-headed shaft coming out next to the shifter shaft. What
I can't figure out is why your spring keeps popping off. Try flipping it
over so that its front side becomes its rear side. Make sure that
adjuster is not pushing it either one way or another. Keep in mind that
the spring must straddle BOTH the pin on the sector gear and the pin on
the adjuster. Push it toward the back as far as it will go and reinstall
the selctor.

I'm about ready to dump this POS! One last chance here. Mechanic got the gen rebuilt, cleaned up the regulator, tuned her all up, adjusted the valves (out of adjustment), set the timing (which was off), got her firing up without the choke. Looking good, but wait, here we go again! The shifter return popped again! Put it back in place, she popped again! And Again! He is as frustrated as I am with this thing, both of us are ready to rip the Guzzi mechanics head off, the guy whom was supposed to have tuned her all up and got the trans all fixed up. Well, he is ready to rip out the engine/trans to figure out why it is that when the return spring is re-inserted, she won't shift higher than 2nd gear, yet, when she pops out of place, she will shift through all 4 gears, except you have to manually return the shifter to center. Mark, Expect a call from Tom Vaughan probably early next week as I told him to console you before ripping the thing apart (this would be the 4th time!). Doesn't make sense to me, she shifted fine on the way home from the Guzzi shop, ride her about 50 miles when the return spring popped out of place. Still had all 4 gears with the major inconvenience of having to manually return the shifter to center. Now with the spring in place she won't go higher than 2nd gear, but when popped out, she runs through all 4 gears. Please tell me this is an easy fix!! It's been a freaking year since I bought this thing and it's been nothing but a nightmare and major $$$$ trying unsuccessfully to get her running right. I'm ready to give up on "Patience" as I'm at my wits end, could be on e-bay soon if we have another major tranny job to do. OK, I've vented. Please help fellow loopers!!
