The system doesn't care what starter is on the bike
The system does not care what gen/reg is on the bike as long as they match
They are not interchangeable. Though you can substitute Lucas for Marelli as they use same internal config.
The Good Book (Guzziology) says so. Chapter 18 verse 15
The specs AREN'T right
The two charging systems are wired differently internally
The label on my regulator is STUCK on
Electricity may well be able to read, just not out loud.
What I want to know is how we jumped from starters to chargers?

Anyhow it's 9:00 pm here & I'm off to get a cup of coffee

huh?
1) The system doesn't care what starter is on the bike. 2) the system doesn't care what BRAND is on the bike. Electricity can't read. The label is only there as a quick way to tell what version it is.
And
that is just a cover that is held on by 2 screws. Unless it is stamped somewhere else I don't know about. you can use a Ac Delco, ND,
whatever...as
long as the specs are right.
and since I don't know how to read the windings...I just use the label. ;-}

There is some kind of voodoo magic going on!
The reason you have to use Marelli VR with Marelli generator & Bosch with Bosch, is that the field windings, I think (& am far too lazy too look it up) are wired directly opposite from make to make & are totally incompatible.
Thumbs Rule!!

I'm confused... why wouldn't the bosch be compatible? the charging
system
doesn't touch the starting system except via the battery.
The rule that you have to use a marelli VR with a Marelli gen is a
rule
of
thumb. Just a quick way to know you have a properly rated VR in the
system.
unless I am wrong and there is some sort of voodoo magic going that I
don't
know about.
The boot protectors eh. I have one that is rusted and cracked. But I
was
looking at it and it doesn't look all that hard to make. I'll try when
I
get
some stainless tube
Z,
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought I was told if you have a
Marelli
starter, you can't use a Bosch in it's place, something to do with
the
electronics of the bike, perhaps a Marelli generator/regulator not
being
compatible with a Bosch starter???? Just wanted to mention it just
in
case. As for the junkyard, wish there was one this way! If you find any of those old style "boot guards", those 1/2 moon shaped guards
that
bolt onto the valve covers, let me know, I'd like a set!
Thanx!

my Marelli starter is poopy. Last week I mentioned this to a dude
and he
says he has a bosch. SO saturday I went down and met up and he
gave

the bosch starter. yes the solenoid goes UNDER the starter.
I ask him how much. He says "See if you can use it. then let me
know
and
we'll figure something out."
Bitchin.
I stuffed it in my tool roll and headed down to the buckaroo for a
beer.
Down there I ran into greg field. I've known him for a while, so
it
wasn't like an odd thing. We get to yakking about my green ambo. And he
says he
has some stuff for me. Next thing I am down in a semi-junk yard/shop
ownded
by a friend of his. and we go digging for the stuff.
Hanging around a junkyard on a sunny afternoon, drinking beer and talking bikes. Yeahhh!
why keep having rallies at campgrounds? They should be held in junkyards.
