Hunter,
What you described is how I have my bikes wired. I use relays.
I think what I was discribing was how the original bikes were wired....as
per the wiring diagrams in the manual. In these main power runs from the
battery to the fuse panel....then to the starter solenoid. As you
mentioned....there is no fuse between this and I suspect that was one of the
means by which melted blocks occured.
Regards...Ian

Subject: starter wiring
Hi Ian, I thought this odd. I have not seen any wired with the power to the soleniod through the ignition switch. I know mine aren't for sure. The power to the RELAY is through the switch and the early bikes even started with the key like a car. In any case they are all pretty much the same in that the relay is switched and fused like most other circuits on the bike. The power to the solenoid comes from the battery directly to the relay contacts (or from the battery connection at the regulator on later bikes) which then controls the soleniod which in turn controls the starter motor which with any luck and a clove of garlic will crank the engine! It is kind of disconcerting that this circuit has no fuse. If the power to the solenoid where to pass through that Marelli key switch, I fear it would be but once or twice as it can hardly take the load the lights put on it. Hunter PS the Premier service manual has the schematics for all this nonsense. At 11:29 AM 6/11/2001 -0400, you wrote ..and
