Hi Ian,
I thought this odd. I have not seen any wired with the power to the
soleniod through the ignition switch. I know mine aren't for sure. The
power to the RELAY is through the switch and the early bikes even started
with the key like a car. In any case they are all pretty much the same in
that the relay is switched and fused like most other circuits on the bike.
The power to the solenoid comes from the battery directly to the relay
contacts (or from the battery connection at the regulator on later bikes)
which then controls the soleniod which in turn controls the starter motor
which with any luck and a clove of garlic will crank the engine! It is kind
of disconcerting that this circuit has no fuse. If the power to the
solenoid where to pass through that Marelli key switch, I fear it would be
but once or twice as it can hardly take the load the lights put on it.
