I'm rebuilding the engine that came with my 1972 basket case. i
actually got 2 engines with the package, one engine has numbers that
match the frame so i'll use that case. However the crankshaft, pistons,
cylinders from that engine don't look so good. The other engine has
good components, but it has the chain driven camshaft. (The original
engine was gear drive.)
Questions: (1) Are there any parts from the chain driven engine that
cannot be substituted into a gear driven block? (2) Is gear driven cam
preferred over chain drive? (3) The oil pumps are different, the
original engine has straight cut gears the chain driven engine has
helical cut gears, and the driving gear of the oil pump is supported by
2 needle bearings. Whats up here?
Thanks for any insight, I'm a rookie in the MotoGuzzi department.
