You want to slip that plastic boot off of the knurled nut (it's
probably hard and stiff by now), undo the nut, pull the cable out and
inspect the end to make sure it's actually fitting into the drive. You
could even pull the drive out and look at it for grins while you're in
there. There should also be a small brass ferrule that fits over the end
of the outer cable, this helps snug everything up and many times is
missing.
When you go to tighten the knurled nut back up, you don't have to
overdo it.
