Pete,

Interesting information...thanks.

As for the blue colour....I don't know why everyone is against it. I kind of
like the bluish hue that has formed on my headers. Goes quite well with the
black finish on the bike.

Geez....I hope people aren't standing around my bike looking at just the
blue colour on the pipes though :-)

Regards....Ian

p.s. on the pipe issue...I have a REALLY old rusty header if you need it.

I have been wondering if the plating itself is a variable in the blueing
discussion.
I talked with a plating / chemistry specialist about this today. I
learned
that chrome plating is tricky because it is a brittle material and prone to
cracking if the base metal has imperfections. Usually copper is plated on
the base metal to level it and then nickel is plated over that and finally
the hard chrome. Blueing can be from an impurity that migrates up to the
surface. When I described the deep blue that sometimes happens, he
suggested cobalt as an impurity that could be coming out. Cobalt can be
in
the nickel or the chrome. The quality of the plating bath will determine
that. He said smaller shops dont have a lab to analyze the baths to
confirm the correct bath chemistry.

I am sure the amount of heat will affect the blueing, but in the case of
the Bonneville blueing all the way down, I have to wonder if the cause
isn't
 in the plating itself.

Just offering this up for general info. It doesn't do much as a prevention
though.
Pete
