I have been wondering if the plating itself is a variable in the blueing
discussion.
I talked with a plating / chemistry specialist about this today. I learned
that chrome plating is tricky because it is a brittle material and prone to
cracking if the base metal has imperfections. Usually copper is plated on
the base metal to level it and then nickel is plated over that and finally
the hard chrome. Blueing can be from an impurity that migrates up to the
surface. When I described the deep blue that sometimes happens, he
suggested cobalt as an impurity that could be coming out. Cobalt can be in
the nickel or the chrome. The quality of the plating bath will determine
that. He said smaller shops dont have a lab to analyze the baths to
confirm the correct bath chemistry.

I am sure the amount of heat will affect the blueing, but in the case of
the Bonneville blueing all the way down, I have to wonder if the cause isn't
in the plating itself.

Just offering this up for general info. It doesn't do much as a prevention
though.

I have put several hundred miles on my eldo since I put my new pipes on
and
they have not turned. One side has a spot of color on it, but I think
thats
from where I didn't clean off the polish all the way. I've been told that

if they don't turn, the bike is slightly rich, but my plugs look normal.
Instant blueing means too lean a mixture. So therfore, I have no idea
what's up with my headers. Maybe it lakes longer than I thought. Btw, At

Guzzi day, I saw a new Bonneville with less than 1000 miles with pipes
that
were blue from the exhaust port almost to the muflers. Everyone's
comments
I heard were of the too lean a mixture persuasion.
Hope this helps.

Hi All,

While we are on the topic of pipe colours.....what does it mean if the
header pipes turn a black colour? Let me guess....cheap headers? :-)

The new headers I put on my 69 Ambo turned blue fairly quickly. Plugs
seemed
to be ok though. I thought that all chrome pipes turned bluish. Stainless
turned golden. Anyone here have a Loopframe where the headers aren't
coloured?

Regards....Ian
