My 2 cents worth. I have an eldo with a later model motor which came with
points. Iopted for a dyna ignition and dyna coils. Unfortunatly, the coils had
been superceeded with a later model, higher impedance coil. My ignition failed
but since changing it have had no problems. What I do notice is when timing
the bike, the mark is very precise and is spot on time after time. With
points, the mark tends to bounce around the mark. Its only a few degrees, but
at higher rpm I belive this contributes to engine roughness. Mark (mg
classics) will tell you how smooth this creature is. Also, this degree of
preciseness allows for moving the timing to just preceeding detonation and
holding it there for optimal performance and gas mileage. It may be difficult
to retrofit a later model distributer to an eldo, but in the case of an engine
swap, there results were great .

I installed a "brand name" Electronic ignition on my 81 CX100, it ran great for a couple years, then started having weird problems, like firing on one cylinder at odd times. After reinstalling the points Ive had no problems whatsoever. I think they are more trouble than they are worth. At least you can fix the problem with a spare set of points.
