I've thought about it from your perspective as well, and it is certainly a
possibility. The part of me that thinks it suspicious that he won't let me
bring a mechanic over just seems to be winning. The fact is, it is a
beautiful bike. I've been really upset since then that things didn't work
out. More importantly, I just don't have the money to risk. I realize
buying any used vehicle is a risk. But the risk is more of a calculated one
when the vehicle is running. If I gave him $3000 and then found it needed
another $2000 or $1500, it would end up sitting in my garage fo a long time.
Bummer.

I was thinking about this discussion over dinner, and thought there might be another legitimate perspective on this bike. I put more then $2000 into my Ambo getting it back on the road, all parts, no labor (did everything myself). So $3000 for a bike that (probably) needs so little doesn't seem bad to me (though if I were in CA I'd take Mark's for $3500 instead, of course). That the guy doesn't want to bother with a mechanical inspection could be attributed to his feeling that he has a really nice and clean antique, and that he doesn't want to waste time haggling with someone who doesn't appreciate it. I would understand that completely, if it is true (which is hard to know of course). That the fork seals may need replacing is reasonable: any rubber parts loose their elasticity after 30 years. If the bike is all there, I think it may be worth considering - Police Ambo's are neat and unusual. And I really like Ambo's. Of course, the carbs may need cleaning, and all rubber parts will probably need replacing in a few years. Age does that, even at low miles. Perhaps if one were to show up with $2700 or so in greenbacks, the guy would turn out to be price-flexible. -Mike (69 Ambo) ===== M.Jones, student of philosophy and religion at Temple University, |
