Its not the tank itself, but the petcocks. If you remove the petcocks and remove the screen filters from them, you will see that one side (probably the right side) has a shorter intake stem than the other. Obviously, the tall one runs dry of fuel first. Opening the second petcock then allows a further drain level. Also, the tunnel in the center of the tank means you get two separate reservoirs when you run very low. I have been known to run out of gas, lean the bike over sideways to drain any residual from the left side to the right side, and then drive a few more miles. That's the way my '73 Eldo was.
