If the starter still turns the engine over freely but it does not fire, I'd
suspect a coil that is failing due to heat.
Pull the spark plugs and lay them on the heads so that they have a decent ground
contact. Then turn over the engine with the starter and see if you get spark on
the electrode of the plug.
A 12 volt Bosch coil for a VW will work fine as a replacement.

A loose Panhead is a happy Panhead. The valve guides on my '63 FLH were so
loose when I took the heads off in February that you could have stuck two valves
in each guide. I can't believe the bike still ran as good as it did.
