Wow. Those magnets glued in? Now you mention it, the Valeo uy I talked
with said they were new and improved and had no problems with the
magnets falling off. Wondered why he would have said that.I will look
and see where I can get mine fixed perhaps. I had no idea those things
were that touchy. Sure wish Bosch had a nice cross over, but talking to
their rep they have nothing they can match.

Hi Keith,

Sorry to hear about the starter troubles. I don't have one to sell you,
but I would encourage you to have the Bosch/Marelli one you currently
have repaired. The Valeo starters have the following attributes (in my
experience):

1. Smaller
2. Lighter
3. More powerful due to gear reduction
4. Leave you push starting the bike in the Lowes parking lot because the

magnets have come loose inside the starter and have jammed everything
up. This happened on my 2000 Quota with a new-and-improved Valeo starter

that "wouldn't ever loose its magnets". Yes, it was a very humid, very
hot Florida Summer day when this happened, too :>
5. Fail to engage/disengage the solenoid "plunger" because the parts
inside have worn way too quickly.
6. Allow plenty of water in and let very little water out of the
solenoid - especially at the rear of the solenoid. Thereby quickly
corroding the metal bits inside and not allowing the brushes to move
freely.

I think you'll save a little money having your existing starter repaired

and I'll bet it will last a lot longer than a brand new Valeo will.

As you can tell, I'm only slightly opinionated about the Valeo starters
:>

After trying a few times, I can't get my starter going. Wondered if
anyone had a spare they would sell before going to the valeo setup to
save some cash. I can pay via Paypal if I can get it shipped asap so i
can try and crank my old girl up this weekend.
