If you have a cracked head, you could be losing compression when hot. I
would run it hot and then do a compression check and compare both cylinders.
Other than that, I would check the timing and maybe replace the coil with a
Bosch Blue unit which you can find at most older VW (air cooled) shops

Subject: Hard Starting When Hot
I have been bringing a '73 Eldorado back to roadworthiness and still have a couple of issues which prevent me riding the bike for more than a couple of miles. I have rewired the entire bike, except for the turn signals, properly tuned the carbs and timiing. It starts almost immediately now and runs fine once warmed up. However, after riding it for, say, 10 miles at highway speed and then stopping and shutting it down, it doesn't want to start up again unless there has been at least a 20 minute cooling off period. I am suspecting the battery, but I would like to hear any other comments or suggestions before I replace it. It looks like a garden tractor battery, so I may not have enough cranking amps. The starter cranks over fine when hot. I also have a #1 cylinder head oil leak that hasn't been stopped with new gaskets. Looks like it's coming from under the first fin below the valvle cover and not from under the valve cover. If it was a cast iron head I might suspect a cracked head, but ... Thanks. I enjoy reading road reports and the responses to other Guzzi owner's problems, progress reports and proud moments in riding and restoration.
