Hi Bob,

The shims are to keep the top fork bushing from moving up and down AFAIK. Without the shim there could be slight movement of the the bushing and resulting noise. Probably won't hurt anything, but to be on the safe side I'd find another to replace the mangled one.

I grease the springs and the tubes with regular old axle grease. It's mostly just to keep the springs and tubes from rusting up under the covers, but also helps prevent squeaks from the spring rubbing against the tube. Cheers,

Thanks for all the help so far. Took the forks apart last night and
noticed that one side had one thick shim and the other side had 2 very
thin shims along with one thick shim. The C-clip had slipped out of the
side with 3 shims and one of the thin shims had be caught down in the
"plunger" and tore into a few pieces when I took things apart. How
important is this extra thin shim? Will it make a difference? When I put
things back together do I need to apply any type of grease to the upper
tube/springs or any other parts or just a little oil on the seals?
Thanks again for all of the advice. I ended up making a removal tool
with my 4" grinder, just happened to have a pipe the perfect size.
Worked like a charm after soaking things with PB Blaster.
