Keith, AJ et al, If it is of any value, I replaced my old, cracked gas cap
gasket with a rubber seal from the plumbing dept. at Home Depot a couple of
years ago. Works great, no evidence of degradation. Bob Hawkes

Sounds like either the previous owner "cream" coated the tank and
perhaps it ran out the neck a little or it is varnish. My gas cap was
completely covered in varnish when I got this bike - I had to scrape it
all off because a buffing wheel wouldn't cut through it. Gas cap looked
like it was copper coated. You don't need any silicone around the neck,
just get a new gas cap gasket. The old VW Beetle oil filler cap gaskets
are a perfect fit for the loop gas cap.

Thanks Keith,

I just went out and checked and when I found that flat spot and lined it

up with the snap ring, instant fit. By the way the flat spot on mine is
toward the seat. Now I just have to re-chrome or trade with Mark. I
agree about it looking better with the cap pointed at you. I wondered
why in Guzziology he mentions it being dangerous. Thanks for explaining
that point :)

Slightly related, to the gas cap that is, I have a dark yellow film
oozing up the outside of the filler neck out onto the tank. I'm guessing

maybe this is varnish from gasoline vapors condensing and following
capillary action (boy there's a lot of 50 cent words). Do I need to run
a bead of sealant around the neck to prevent this? Silicone?

AJ,

As far as I know, the tanks all had the same neck size. The earlier
tanks had lower necks than the later models, think the change was in
1968-1969 time frame. Check your filler neck. There should be a flat
spot on one side, either the side facing the speedo, or the side facing
the seat. That is where the snap ring sits. The handle can be
assembled to either point down towards the seat or up towards the speedo

also. I have mine pointing down towards the seat - like the look but
Gre Fields book said the can castrate the rider in accidents ;(

I've got one but it doesn't fit my tank. How can that be? Is the
filler

neck on the tank removable/interchangable with a smaller diameter one?

Would love to use mine for that classic look.

Think I mentioned that on the board quite some time ago. Also
recall

that Mark E (MG Classics) sells re-chromes for $50, or he can
re-chrome

yours or trade yours for a re-chrome + cash (which is what I did).
