Bob,
The National Cycle windshield is pretty popular - essentially
an old Harley dresser windshield. Got mine off ebay for $25. I'm 6'1" &
have a 32" inseam; I mounted mine high but still look over the screen.
Still get some buffeting on my helmet and get some wind, but no load on
my chest & arms relaxed (LAPD bars). Charlie used another style offered
by MG that looks real good. But I would expect that the shudder you
experienced (if related to your fairing) will return with a windshield.
I experienced a low frequency weave on my bike once I installed the
windshield...actually it was there with no windshield too, just a lot
less pronounced. I just finished the installation of a hydraulic
steering damper (see my previous posts) that has cured my problem. Now
that I've accumulated another 50 miles of high speed interstate riding
(70-80 mph), I feel confident in stating that the weave is gone. I can
finally enjoy the ride without sweating the possibility of a PIO/Tank
Slapper. I'm a happy camper! You might want to try a damper & reinstall
your fairing (or a windshield) to cure the shudder you're experiencing.

My '73 Police Special had the Wixom fairing, but would cause bike to shudder at speeds above 50 or more. Took it off and now I almost get blown off at highway speeds, but no shudder. Still have the Police bars and floor boards, so I'm sitting straight up catching it all. Has anyone tried a screen, i.e. Memphis Shades type? Any opinions on what works for you. Would like as much air as possible but still want a relaxed ride at higher speeds and not feel like I'm holding on for dear life. Want something low, don't like looking through a wind shield. I'm 6'3" tall. BOB |
