Shimming is a high likelyhood whichever route I end up going.
Does the input shaft seal go in from the inside or outside of the case?

The external linkage was slightly different, but you can swap that out tit-for-tat. The clutch input hubs were different on the earlist of v700 models (different internal tooth depth pattern). You can use a later hub on a earlier transmission, but not vice-versa. So, you should be okay there, too. I can't think of any other differences, so - if functional - I'd put a new set of seals in it and have a go with it. Actually, I'd shim the shift drum, too...but that's not required.
