Some friends of mine have done that with their tanks and then
electroplated them with zinc. Seriously, it works. Scott tried it out
with a trashed tank and then cut it open to see if it really worked.
Nice and clean and shiny. It got all the rust out of the cracks too.
What is great is that the process is cheap and you can do it at home
without harsh chemicals. Did I mention cheap??? You have all the stuff
laying around in the garage. Now go get some laundry soda and a couple
of zinc plated bolts. Don't forget to wash several times between rust
removal and plating.
