Hi Ted,
It should feel smooth. If in gear, you may feel a little bit of the gear
teeth pressing against one another, but it shouldn't feel rough. You may
have a bad bearing in there, that, in conjunction with a loose output
shaft nut, is causing a racket under certain load conditions??? It isn't
going to get any better, so I'd bite the bullet and take it apart and
see what is going on in there.
