Hmmm,
I'll try that, but looking at the wiring diagram and the back of the tach,
I have:
a bulb
a ground
black to negative side of coil
blue-black to positive side of coil.
Are you saying run 12 volts to positive and both the ground and the black
wire to ground and the needle should max out?
I have the tach out on my desk so that would be an easy check if I
understand you correctly.

AJ, Did you try to use use a hot lead (12volt) on the blue/black wire side? The black is ground, blue/black gets the voltage from the contacts (points) which is interrupted according to the opening of them, thus supplying more voltage at higher rpm. Using straight 12volt should move the needle all the way to max rev... Before checking Ebay I would open the tach to check for loose connections.
