Thanks Greg, I was thinking an air powered rattle gun would work, but wasn't
sure if there would be enough resistance.
What exactly is a detent plunger? (if its in the manual I'll look it up when
I get home)
And, as Greg B. pointed out I already removed my offset shift adjuster, is
there a way to reinsert it and adjust it without opening the transmission?

The best way to remove that nut is with a 27mm deep, thinwall socket
and a rattle gun, either air or electric. Electric ones can be gotten
from Harbor Freight for about $30 on sale. With a rattle gun, you do
not need to hold the input.
For some reason, a lot of these 5-speeds have been grenading in Seattle
lately, so I've been getting lots of experience at this.
As for shimming, it works but is not worth a teardown just for it. More
effective and simpler is to pull out the detent plunger and flatten the
profile of the tip.

| I thought about holding the transmission input gear, but was afraid that would hurt the internals. I guess they must be pretty tough to drive the bike in the first place. I guess you made the decision for me. That was the offset shift adjuster (though it has a bolt top not a screwdriver tip). Does Pete's article detail how to reinstall that item? I guess I was a little daunted by the 9 pages of instructions on how to shim the transmission. After looking it over I realized Pete goes into a lot of detail.
