Subject: Getting rid of the Bosch Regulator?

I put Greg Fields alternator conversion on the Eldo, and
it appears to be charging the battery (14.5v), but after a
long ride the battery was in fact, quite dead (9v). Had
the battery tested - its fine. The other symptom is the
alt/formerly generator light is not lighting (no its not
the bulb, when I ground the wire to it with the switch on,
it lights).
I'm wondering if I could have a sketchy regulator. Greg's
instructions are quite clear on which wires to remove and
which to leave - the one supply positive to the regulator
directly from the battery, and the one supplying power to
starter relay from the regulator. Is there any reason I
can't just remove the regulator and supply power to the
starter relay directly from the battery?
