You want the freeplay at "lever closed" position. What you want to check
now is where the arm engages the rear throwout bearing. It is easier if
you remove the swing arm as Patrick said, but you can also check it with
it on, a visual inspection, with the engaging arm removed- the rear
thowout should be free of any gouges or circular marks, and with the
engine running and in neutral it should not be spinning! Also check it
with it in gear, clutch pulled in and slowly letting it out- (with the
bike on the centerstand and be very careful of course)- make sure it is
not spinning.

Yes, I had freeplay at the end of the throw. If anything,
there was less "freeplay" at the inside "lever closed" end
of the throw, meaning the clutch disengaged just before I
ran out of lever action, and engaged, just after starting
to release the lever. -tom

After about 70 miles, the Clutch started "shortening",
less and less
freeplay to engagement, and barely enough to disengage.
Finally it
wouldn't disengage and stalled at a light. It looked
easy, the two
locknuts had backed off at the clutch adj at the rear of
the tranny. I
fixed that, but the lever action felt "funny" too firm,
like the clutch
still wasn't disengaging. Still, I hit the starter
button - nothing.

How did you originally adjust the clutch? Was there
some sloppy freeplay at the outer end of the throw?

I'm a real stickler about clutch handle freeplay.
People adjust out ALL of the freeplay which overloads
and destroys the rear throwout bearing. Might want to
pull that out and look. Easier if you pull off the
swingarm.
