Thanks Pat- I will check the valve faces- although it did not appear to
be blowing any smoke at all- but I will check nonetheless.
I guess it really may have been the route/speed/wind factors- the trip
was from San Francisco to Los Angeles and a side trip around the central
coast as well as San Diego- total miles actually around 1200. I did take
101 down in the pouring rain and was averaging around 65mph , then 5
back averaging 75mph. There really was not that much wind. So would it
really make that much a difference going 65 in 4th gear as opposed to 75
in 5th??? Well, I guess if I check the valves i will know, because there
really isn't anything else I can think of that would be affecting it. I
am also going to ride in to work this week and will be keeping a close
eye on it.

Give us the location details of this recent trip. Headwind? Big issue. High speed? Trying to keep 80 on highway 5 will suck a LOT more fuel than doing 65 on highway 99. Valve condition? The first sign of failing valve faces is a rapid climb in fuel consumption. Patrick Hayes Fremont CA |
