Hi Keith,
First off, I think you are good to go with your set up the way it is
pictured. I don't think you will have any trouble with that rod breaking
as it is a larger diameter than 6mm allthread.
Second, I added some more information to my website - with pictures -
about how I have it set up now. Just take a look at this link and let me
know if you have any additional questions.

Finally, I did have slippage problems with the SOB. I filed on the
bracket to try to get a tighter fit, but that didn't get the job done. I
ended up putting a small weld on it to hold it in place. I never tried a
chemical approach (such as loc tite, etc.).
As for the salt air - I've just about got all of the Greg Barratt
stainless on the loop. I just need one last push to get the rest taken
care of.
I've also sourced a proper 6mm linkage rod from McMaster-Carr...so I'll
be replacing the allthread soon enough.
