Nice old BMW, or is it a Zundapp, wish my eyes were better. Not a Douglas or
Lilac(?) though.

Thanks, Ted. I suppose I should give that a try first, that way I don't have
to tear into it.

If your clutch is slipping and you think it may be due to grease flung onto
your plates, that would probably be an ideal reason to do the mineral
spirits wash-out thing Greg Field has mentioned before. plug up the little
hole beneath your clutch, pour some mineral spirits into the clutch via the
rubber plug on the side and work the clutch a few times while running, then
drain the mineral spirits.
I imagine that would wash away grease, but don't really know.

I used a grease on my drive spline and the clutch hub that said it was wheel
bearing grease. My dad said it was good, sticky stuff, but it seemed that
mostly it stuck to itself (it's very stringy). when I just had my rear wheel
off to check the splines, they were dry and it had flung the grease all over
inside the hub. I wonder if the grease was flung off the tranny hub and is
causing my slippage?
Guess I'll see in the next couple of weeks when I take it apart. I know that
my clutch was slipping 10 years ago when I took the whole thing apart
because gear lube leaked out the hub seal when I overfilled the trans. I
tried cleaning the clutch plates with mineral spirits and brake/carb
cleaner.
